County Waterford is located on Ireland’s south east coast in the province of Munster. The county is known as The Déise after a tribe of native Gaelic people called the Déisi who were driven from the south of the country and settled here.
Waterford has two mountain ranges the Knockmealdown Mountains and the Comeragh Mountains, while the coastline is a series of stunning beaches and rugged cliffs with pretty seaside resorts such as Tramore. In addition to the varied and spectacular scenery, the county is rich in pre-historic and historic sites including megalithic tombs, castles, abbeys and settlements spanning the Celt, Viking, Norman and Anglo-Saxon occupation of the region.
Waterford City is the county town and is Ireland’s oldest city, dating back to Viking times. Founded by Viking traders in 914, Waterford City has a medieval character with its city walls and cobbled back streets. The city is probably most famous as being the home of Waterford Crystal.
The towns and villages of County Waterford offer an abundance of tourist sites and activities for visitors and there is something to suit all tastes, from history and culture to walking or driving tours and plenty of shopping. Being a maritime county, visitors can part-take in any of the countless water sports on offer from angling and sailing to surfing and diving. The county is also an ideal family destination with plenty of family friendly resorts and activities.
