Cork County is located within the province of Munster in Ireland’s southwest. The county is the southern-most and the largest county in Ireland. Cork is nicknamed “The Rebel County” and a common misconception is that the name relates to the prominent role played by Cork during the War of Independence from 1919-1921. However, the name dates further back to the 15th century and refers to the support given by the Cork townsmen to Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the English throne during the reign of King Henry VII.
As the largest county in Ireland, Cork has an exciting history and is a county of contrasts. The breathtaking scenery of West Cork is famous the world over and its wild and rugged beauty is a haven for hikers and artists alike. From the lively streets of Cork city to the tranquillity of North Cork, the family atmosphere in East Cork and the magnificence of West Cork, Cork really does have something for everyone.
