Wicklow

County Wicklow is located on Ireland’s east coast, just south of Dublin in the province of Leinster. Known as the Garden of Ireland, Wicklow boasts beautiful scenery and a spectacular coastline. The county is a rich mix of sandy beaches, lakes and waterfalls, mountains and historical sites.

The idyllic towns and villages in Wicklow have been the scene of many films and TV series, most notably Ballykissangel which was filmed in the picturesque village of Avoca. The area is also rich in historical and archaeological sites and is home to some of Ireland’s most well-preserved early Christian remains including the 6th century monastic settlement at Glendalough.

Whatever your interests you will find something in Wicklow to suit. Walkers and hikers can enjoy the many trails and hikes throughout the county and the Wicklow Mountains. The Wicklow Way is the oldest marked long distance walking trail in Ireland. There are also countless opportunities to part-take in fishing & angling, horse riding, water sports and other outdoor activities.

Wicklow town is the principal county town and surrounds the picturesque Wicklow harbour which is now home to a well established yacht and sailing club. The town was thought to have originated from a Viking settlement although there has been some debate about this and it has been suggested that, due to its natural harbour and strategic location, a settlement already existed prior to the Viking invasion.
