Offaly

County Offaly lies in the heart of Ireland in the province of Leinster and is often referred to as “The Faithful County”. There is a wealth of historical sites throughout the county including castles and abbeys and one of Ireland’s most important monastic sites at Clonmacnoise. A large part of the county is occupied by mountains and bogs including the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the Bog of Allen and the Blackwater Bog.

Tullamore is the county town and is a bustling commercial hub for the surrounding area. It is also home to the famous Tullamore Dew and Irish Mist whiskeys. The Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre is located on the site of the original distillery with exhibitions on Tullamore Dew and Irish Mist whiskeys. The Heritage Centre is open to the public all year round. Birr is another of Offaly’s important towns and is a designated Irish Heritage Town that retains much of its original Georgian heritage. Birr castle is one of the main attractions in the town.
