County Meath is located in the east of Ireland in the province of Leinster, and lies north-west of Dublin. Due to its rich historical past, it is known as “The Royal County” and was once the seat of the High Kings of Ireland who ruled from the Hill of Tara. As one of Ireland’s most historic counties, Meath has also been dubbed the Heritage Capital of Ireland.
Amid the beautiful scenery, there are numerous important archaeological monuments and historical sites throughout the county. The Boyne Valley, in the heart of the county, is probably one of the richest and most important historical areas in the country and is home to the megalithic burial tombs of Knowth, Dowth and Newgrange, the Hill of Tara and many other monastic and historic sites.
The county’s main town is the market town of Navan, a thriving commercial centre which has become particularly popular in recent years with residents wishing to commute to Dublin. The town offers a host of shopping and entertainment opportunities for visitors.
Along with offering visitors a rich cultural and historical experience, visitors to Meath can also enjoy a wide range of activities from angling to golfing. Since the county is relatively flat it is also an ideal place for cycling and horse riding.
