The province of Leinster, from the old Irish word Laigin, lies on the east of Ireland and comprises twelve counties, the largest number in any of the four provinces. The counties of Leinster are Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.
Leinster is home to Dublin City, the country’s capital, and is the most densely populated of the four provinces. Historically, County Meath, which forms part of Leinster, was the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland at Tara. Today, Dublin is the home of the Irish government and is the official residence of the country’s president.
The landscape of Leinster is rich and diverse, varying from lakes and lush farmland in the midlands to rolling hills and mountains in Dublin and Wicklow. The unspoiled countryside, along with the extensive and sheltered coastline and numerous historical and archaeological sites make the province the ideal place to holiday in Ireland.
